Herbal information (submitted by Mikhalia)    {ongoing posts, all will go under the same heading}

apple       cloverdandelionBasilElderElecampane

Apple- 23/7/99

Magical uses- The blossoms are good for love and healing spells. Giving half of an apple to your lover to eat while you eat the first half will ensure a happy relationship. Since an apple is a symbol of immortality it is given as an offering on Samhain.

Medicinal uses- Crushed apple leaves can be rubbed on a fresh wound to keep it from getting infected. Apple is also good for use as a diuretic.  Apple peels can be made into a tea that is good for rheumatic illness. Apple wine is an ancient "cure all" which has been mentioned as early as the 2nd century AD

Legend and Lore- The apple tree is a very hardy tree which grows in many different climates which attests to many legends about it. The most famous being the story of Adam and Eve. In all honesty the bible does not say the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge is an apple but that is the common belief.  The Greeks also had a few apple stories as well. The origin of the Trojan War was attributed to the Apple of Discord, a golden apple thrown down in front of an assembly of the Gods by the Goddess of Chaos Eris. There was an
inscription on it which read "For the Fairest" Naturally this caused a bit of trouble since Hera - Wife of Zues and Queen of the Gods, Athene -Goddess of Wisdom, and Aphrodite - Goddess of Love all wanted the apple. Paris the son of the King of Troy was appointed to choose the most beautiful of the three. They all offered him something if he chose them, Hera offered him power and riches, Athene offered him wisdom and fame but he chose Aphrodite he offered him the love of the most beautiful woman on earth who was Helen the wife of a Greek king. With Aphrodite's help Paris kidnapped Helen and returned to Troy with her. His refusal to return her to her husband sparked the Trojan War and lead to the destruction of Troy.

Clover- 13/8/99

Magical uses- Clover is good in prosperity, luck and health spells. Carrying a three leaf clover brings you protection while carrying a four leaf clover brings luck.

Medicinal uses- Clover is good for a sleep aid when you are overly tired.  Clover is good to use on children with coughs, wheezing, and bronchitis as it is mild enough for their systems. Clover can also be used for acne and other skin eruptions.

Legends and Lore- The three leaf clover was associated with the Christian Trinity, the greek and Roman Triad Goddesses, and the sacred sun wheel of the Celts. At one point it was considered a charm against witches. The three leaf clover is also the National flower of Ireland (although some contest that wood sorrel is the true shamrock). The four leaf clover was also considered a Christian symbol at one point as a symbol of the cross, it was widely used to ward of evil andwitches during the Burning Times. It is also said to help the wearer see fairies, various spirits, heal illnesses, and to have good luck. There is an old rhyme associated with the four leaf clover in which each of the four leaves represented different aspects of happines. One leaf stoof for fame, the second was wealth, the third was for a faithful mate, and the fourth was for good health. The five leaf clover is said to be unlucky and the two leaf is said to enable a maiden to see her future mate.

Dandelion - 13/8/99

Magical uses- It is believed that blowing the down off of a dandelion sends your thoughts to a loved one no  matter how far away. If the down falls off without the wind helping it means that rain is on the way.

Medicinal uses- Can be used to clean up acne and other types of skin eruptions. It is good for the liver and helps clear obstructions and detoxifies poisons. Using the juice from a broken stem on a wart for a few days will dry up the wart. Dandelion can also help reduce a fever, constipation, insomnia and hypochondria. It is also good to use as a tonic and a stimulant. The fresh juice is the most effective treament but a tea made out of dandelion will work also.

Legend and Lore- The name dandelion is derived from the french word dent-de-lion which means lion's tooth. It was given this name because of it's rough jagged edges which resemble a row of teeth from early depictions made out of wood. To dream of a dandelion is supposed to be bad luck.

Basil-  6/9/99
Magical uses- It is used for protection spells and aids in attracting love and keeping it. If sprinkled over your lover while sleeping it eliminates infidelity. Basil is used for wealth and prosperity spells, also a leave carried in your pocket or purse will aid in attracting money and prosperity.

Medicinal uses- Externally applied to insect bites it will draw out the poison. Internally it is used for stomach cramps, flu, menstrual cramps, vomiting colds, and headaches. Basil is also used for reducing stomach acid.   It has also been used for a headache and whooping cough. It is mostly used for the stomach and surrounding organs and will alleviate constipation and entritis.

Legend and Lore- In Haiti it is associated with the Goddess of Love Erzulie. Haitian store owners sprinkle basil water around their places of business to chase evil spirits away and bring prospective customers. It was believed that a woman who wished her husband to stay faithful would dust her upper body especially her heart with basil powder and he would then be a faithful and loving mate.

Elder- 6/9/99
Magical uses- Elder wood is used in making ritual staffs and wands. Scattering leaves to the four directions provides protection. A lot of people make Elderberry wine to use in rituals. Grown near your home elder will protect the dwellers within. In some places it is considered unlucky to have furniture made of elder wood.

Medicinal uses- CAUTION Pregnant or lactating women should not used elder internally. CAUTION Any part of the elder if fresh can cause poisoning. Once it is dried or cooked it loses the poisonous qualities.  Elder oil is good for chapped skin, and the tea, mixed with sassafras, applied externally is good for acne. You can use the leaves as an insect repellent and as a treatment for wounds. Warm tea from the flowers can induce sweating. It is good for headaches related to a cold or rheumatism. When mixed with lard or other creamy base it makes a good ointment for burns. The dried berries can be made into a tea useful for diarrhea.

Legend and Lore- Elder has been used by man all the way back to the Bronze and Stone ages. In earlier times flutes and similar musical instruments were made with Elder. The Goddess Freyja chose to live in a black Elder because of its purported medicinal qualities. Later it gained a bad reputation in Europe for being associated with witches and evil. It was also considered dangerous
to sleep under the shade or plant one near the home or make cradles out it for the same reason. According to them it was the favorite plant of the witches, as this is where some witches lived and the people were afraid to cut it down for fear of the tree's witch. If a person cut down an elder tree it was believed that they would die within three days. Also witches who were being hunted were supposed to be able to turn themselves into branches of the tree. Part of the reason for such a foul reputation was the fact that in those days anything poison was considered to be evil and province of the devil, and since elder can be poisonous it fell into that category.

Elecampane- 6/9/99
Magical uses- Used during scrying to increase effectiveness. Add this herb to love charms and amulets of all kinds.

Medicinal uses- It is good for intestinal worms, water retention,  slows tooth decay and hardens the gums. It is used in respiratory ailments, bronchitis, and urinary ailments. Elecampane is usually combined with other herbs to increase effectiveness. The oil is effective in treating diarrhea and whooping cough. Externally it is used as awash for wounds and itching rashes. burned it works as an insect repellent. A decoction is used in treatment of worms and externally as a wash for scabies.

Legend and Lore- It's species name helenium was a reference to Helen of Troy who was said to be carrying it when she was abducted by Paris.

Oils  submitted by Foxydot 15/9/99

the process i use to make herbal infusion oils is really very simple, but it requires a bit of patience.

start with a squeaky clean glass jar with a tight fitting lid or cork. I generally make only about 1oz at a time, so i use a 3 oz lab vial.

put the dried herb or mixture in a mortar...about 3 heaping tablespoons. grind grind grind, until it begins to get really powdery...and the fresher the herbs are, the better.

SLOWLY add a high quality grapeseed oil to the mortar and grind the herb INTO it. why grapeseed? it's light and not very greasy, has almost no odor of its own, and is relatively inexpensive. i know people who use sweet almond or other oils, and i have used these in the past, but grapeseed remains my favorite. it will go rancid without the addition of an antioxidant tho, so be sure to add the vitamin e.

pour the whole mess into the little jar. scrape all the oily herb paste in there. for my 3 oz vial i add the contents of two 400mg vitamin e capsules (just snip off one end and SQUEEZE). shake the heck out of it.

put the jar in a cool, dry, dark place to mature...one moon cycle is a good guestimate. some people say to put it on a windowsill for the sun to warm it. i have never done it this way, but i can see how that might "speed up" the process. shake the jar 2-3 times a day; once a week strain off the oil and repeat the process with new herbs and the old oil (you don't have to keep adding vitamin e or anything...just grind the herbs into the old oil mix.)

after about a month, strain it off and smell the oil. i usually put a bit on the inside of my elbow, walk into another room and sniff. if it
isn't strong enough, continue the process for another month or so.

to strain: line a funnel with a coffee filter and pour the oil through. it takes a while for all the oil to drip through, but it is worth it...you won't have little chunks in your finished product.

some herbs have a stronger fragrace than others, and some actually work better when fresh, rather than dried...the upshot there is that there will be water which you have to figure out how to get rid of. the coffee filter should get most of it, but just look for it sitting on the top of the oil. if you want to try making an oil that WILL contain an odor, try DILL. this is one of my favorite! just get a good quality dried dill weed from the grocery, and follow the process. the oil is quite pungent after only about two weeks and has a lovely emerald green color.

magickal notes:
I have a shelf in my pantry which i have concecrated for making magickal oils and tools.

always grind in a clockwise motion. i usually do this in a circle, with an appropriate color candle burning, and while humming my little oil making tune  ;).

I put in two or three VERY SMALL empowered gems. these act like the shaker beads in nail polish to help mix the herbs together.                                                                back to the top

Drying Herbs (submitted by Amalthaea 18/11/99)

There are 3 different ways to dry herbs for future use, be it cooking or ritual use.  The first is to make a drying screen.  Take a piece of plastic window screen mesh, and fasten it to a wooden frame, fastening it to the sides of the wood.  This leaves room for the air to circulate under the screen, for faster drying, and also prevents the herbs from becoming moldy.  Allow them to dry in a cool, dry place.  It doesn't matter if it is warm or cool.

The second way is to use silicon gel beads, and putting them in the microwave.  This is the fastest method, but also expensive.  Silica beads are found in packets in new shoe boxes, inside purses, or can be purchased via mail order.  Most stores do not carry  them.  imes vary, by the type of herb.  If you need to findout, please e-mail me at [email protected].

The third way is by hanging them to dry.  This is best with flowers or herbs with longer stems.  You can tie them in a bunch and hang them upside down, or just hang them singly on a piece of cord, etc. stretched across a room.  They must be upside down!  This method actually takes the longest.  Most flowers require being hung for two weeks.

To use the herbs, you must have a mortar & pestle.  They must be ground up, and the seeds removed.  It takes about 1 hour to grind up the herbs for proper consistancy.  They must be ground up!  If you are using them for cooking, leave them on the stalks until you are ready to use them.  Growing and preparing the herbs yourself, makes the magic stronger.  You have had a hand in the growing, cutting, and preparation of the herbs, therefore they have a connection to you.

If you don't have a lot of space to grow them, You can make many types of containers to grow them in.  A good guide for this purpose is All About Herbs from Ortho Books.  An excellent guide to finding herbs, and their uses, and what part of the plant to use, is The Herb Book by John Lust.  The book to learn about drying them in the microwave is called Herb Drying Handbook by Nora Blose and Dawn Cusick.

Moon Planting  (Submitted by Beth 21/11/99)

The Moon's magnetic force pulls all that contains water: the tides of our
oceans, the blood and fluids of our bodies, and the vital essences of all
plantlife--such influence can be seen quite clearly in the growth of plants.

All crops that produce their yield above ground should be planted during the
Waxing (New to Full) Moon: the first week is especially good for crops that
have their seeds on the outside, such as aspargus, cabbage, broccoli, celery
and
spinach. The second week (between the 1st quarter and the Full Moon) is best
for crops that produce seeds on the inside, like peppers, tomatoes, peaches,
cucumbers and melons.

During the waning Moon (Full to New Moon) plant root crops such as potatoes,
peanuts, carrots and onions. *Do not* plant on the day of the New Moon or
Full Moon.

You can find a pretty good 1999 Moon Planting Guide at the following site:

HERBS  AND THEIR MAGICAL USES  (Submitted by Obsidian  9/1/00)

Adam & Eve Roots
Use for Love and Happiness and spells related.

Agrimony
Use in all protection sachets and spells, also to banish negative energies and spirits. It has also long been used to reverse spells sent against the magician; i.e. it not only breaks hexes, it also sends them back to the hexer. Agrimony placed under the head will make one sleep as if dead, according to ancient lore, but don't use this for insomnia: the sleeper won't awaken until the herb is removed.

Alfalfa
Prosperity, Money. Keep in the home to protect from poverty and hunger. It is best placed in the cupboard or pantry.

Almond
Money, Prosperity, Wisdom

Amaranth
A crown of amaranth flowers worn on the head speeds healing. To make sure that you are never struck by a bullet, pull up a whole amaranth plant (including roots) preferably on a Friday during the Full Moon. Leave an offering to the plant and then fold it, roots and all, in a piece of white cloth. Wear this against your breast and you'll be 'bullet-proof.' The dried amaranth flowers have been used to call forth the dead, and are also carried to cure the affections'; i.e. to mend a broken heart.

An-other method instructs the magician to place a small wreath of yucca fibers on his or her head. This allows the person to assume any form desired.A cross of yucca
fibers twisted together and placed on the hearth protects the house from evil. Suds made ftom the yucca plant are used in purifying the body before magic. If a spell to remove curses or illnesses is performed, repeat the yucca-suds bath afterward to ensure that all traces of the evil or sicknesses are removed.
